You can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) somewhat by eating a nutritious diet and getting regular exercise. If you have a family history of ARMD, wearing high-quality sunglasses when outside to protect the tissues of your eye can also delay the potential onset of ARMD.
Macular Degeneration - What is it?
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is an eye disease that can cause central vision loss by damaging the macula, which is the central area of the retina responsible for detailed vision. ARMD can occur in two forms: “Dry” and “Wet”.
Dry: the most common form of ARMD, and occurs when the macula thins with age and tiny clumps of protein called drusen begin to appear. This can cause a slow progression of central vision loss. There is no way to treat dry ARMD yet.
Wet: the least common form, but much more serious in vision loss. Wet ARMD is when new, abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula area. These vessels may then leak blood or other fluids, causing scarring of the macula. This can result in faster vision loss.
Symptoms are often unnoticed during the early stages of the disease. Some people may notice:
There is no cure for dry ARMD, and unfortunately any loss in vision cannot be restored. However, researchers and doctors believe there is a link between nutrition and the progression of dry ARMD. Making dietary changes and taking nutritional supplements can slow the progression of vision loss. For wet ARMD, treatment often involves intraocular injections to reduce blood vessel leakage.
Our doctors at First Class Eye Care are both residency-trained in ocular disease and use advanced in-house technology to diagnose and manage these conditions. If you have ARMD, or are at risk, schedule an evaluation with us today!
